Why Posture Matters Now More Than Ever

Episode Notes:

In this episode, Dr. David Ridos from Freedom Family Chiropractic in Weston discusses why posture has become increasingly important in today’s world. While you may have heard about posture before, the modern lifestyle has created unprecedented challenges that make proper posture more critical than at any other time in human history.

Dr. Ridos breaks down how our daily habits and technology use affect our spinal health and overall wellbeing. Tune in to discover why this age-old advice matters more now than ever and what you can do about it.

Hey there, this is Doctor David Ridos from Freedom Family Chiropractic here in Weston, and I’m really glad you’re tuning in today. We need to talk about something that affects nearly every single person listening right now — and that’s your posture.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. You’ve heard about posture before, right? Sit up straight, don’t slouch, all that stuff your mom told you. But here’s the thing — posture matters more today than it ever has in human history, and I’m going to tell you exactly why.

Think about your day for just a second. How much time do you spend looking at screens? Your phone, your computer, your tablet. If you’re like most people, we’re talking eight, ten, maybe twelve hours a day. Our heads are tilted forward, our shoulders are rounded, and our bodies are locked in positions they were never designed to hold for that long.

Here’s what’s happening. Your head weighs about ten to twelve pounds when it’s balanced directly over your spine. But for every inch your head moves forward, you add roughly ten pounds of extra pressure on your neck and upper back. So if your head is jutting forward just three inches while you’re scrolling through your phone — that’s thirty to forty pounds of pressure your neck is trying to manage. That’s like carrying a bowling ball around on your shoulders all day long.

And let me tell you what I see in the office every single day. People coming in with headaches, neck pain, shoulder tension, and they can’t figure out why. They’re doing everything else right — they’re exercising, they’re eating well, they’re getting sleep. But their posture is quietly sabotaging them.

The other thing that’s changed is how we work. Remote work, hybrid schedules — these can be amazing for quality of life, but a lot of folks are working from their couch, their kitchen table, or hunched over a laptop in bed. Without a proper ergonomic setup, your body pays the price.

So what can you actually do about this? Let me give you three simple things you can start today.

First — and this is huge — set a timer on your phone for every thirty minutes. When it goes off, stand up, roll your shoulders back, and take five deep breaths. Just that simple reset helps break the cycle of forward head posture and gives your muscles a chance to relax.

Second, bring your screen to eye level. Whether it’s your phone or your computer, you should be looking straight ahead, not down. Get a laptop stand, prop your monitor up on some books, whatever it takes. Your neck will thank you.

Third, strengthen your upper back. Simple exercises like wall angels or shoulder blade squeezes can make a massive difference. These help counteract all that forward rounding and keep your shoulders in a healthier position.

Now here’s the reality — if you’re already dealing with pain, stiffness, or tension that won’t go away, it’s time to get checked out. Posture problems don’t fix themselves, and the longer they go on, the more compensations your body creates. That’s where chiropractic care comes in. We can assess your spine, check your alignment, and create a plan that actually addresses the root cause — not just the symptoms.

At Freedom Family Chiropractic, we see people every day who thought they just had to live with neck pain or headaches. And the truth is, most of the time, they don’t. With the right adjustments, some targeted exercises, and better posture habits, people feel like themselves again.

So here’s my challenge for you. Over the next week, just pay attention. Notice how you’re sitting right now. Notice how you hold your phone. Notice how your workspace is set up. Awareness is the first step.

And if you’re in the Weston area and you want to get your posture checked, give us a call at Freedom Family Chiropractic. We’d love to help you feel better and move better.

Thanks so much for listening today. Take care of that spine — it’s the only one you’ve got. I’m Doctor David Ridos, and I’ll catch you on the next episode.
