Understanding Sciatica and How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Episode Notes:

In this episode of the Freedom Family Chiropractic podcast, Dr. David Ridos breaks down one of the most common complaints he sees in his Weston, Florida practice — sciatica. He explains what sciatica actually is, why it causes that distinctive sharp, burning, or shooting pain that radiates down the leg, and what’s happening in the body when it strikes.

Dr. Ridos walks listeners through the most common causes and risk factors for sciatica, helping you understand whether what you’re experiencing might be this condition. He also outlines how chiropractic care can address the root cause rather than simply masking the pain.

Whether you’re currently suffering from sciatica or simply want to protect yourself from it in the future, this episode gives you the knowledge and tools to take control of your spinal health and start moving toward lasting relief.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m doctor Ridos, and you’re listening to the Freedom Family Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Weston, Florida. Today we’re talking about something I hear about almost every single day in my practice — sciatica. If you’ve ever felt that sharp, burning, or shooting pain that travels down your leg, you already know exactly what I’m talking about. And if you haven’t — well, stick around, because understanding this now could save you a lot of suffering later.

So let’s start with the basics. What actually is sciatica? Here’s the thing — sciatica isn’t really a diagnosis on its own. It’s more of a symptom. It describes pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, which is the longest nerve in your entire body. That nerve starts in your lower back, runs through your hips and buttocks, and travels all the way down each leg. When that nerve gets irritated or compressed — you feel it. Sometimes it’s a dull ache. Sometimes it’s a sharp, electric zap. Sometimes it’s numbness or tingling down into your foot. Every person feels it a little differently.

Now, here’s what’s interesting. Most cases of sciatica originate in the lower back. A disc that’s shifted or bulging slightly, a joint in the spine that’s not moving the way it should, or muscle tension deep in the hip — any of these can put pressure on that sciatic nerve and trigger all that pain you’re feeling down your leg. The pain in your leg is actually coming from your back. That surprises a lot of people.

You know what I hear a lot? People say they’ve just been resting, hoping it goes away on its own. And look — sometimes mild irritation does calm down with rest. But here’s the problem. If the underlying cause isn’t addressed, it tends to come back. And sometimes it comes back worse. The root issue — that mechanical problem in the spine or the hip — is still sitting there. Rest gives your body a break, but it doesn’t fix the alignment or the movement problem that started everything.

That’s where chiropractic care comes in. Let me break this down for you. What we do is evaluate the spine and the pelvis — looking at how things are aligned, how the joints are moving, and where there might be stress on that sciatic nerve. Then we use gentle, specific adjustments to restore proper motion and reduce that pressure on the nerve. When the spine starts moving better and the nerve has room to breathe again, the body can begin to heal the way it’s designed to.

We also look at the muscles involved — because tight muscles, especially deep in the hip, can compress that nerve on their own. We combine adjustments with soft tissue work, stretching guidance, and movement advice to give you the most complete approach we can.

So what can you do right now? First — avoid sitting for long, unbroken stretches. Get up and move gently every thirty to forty minutes. Prolonged sitting puts a lot of pressure on the lower spine and can really aggravate sciatica. Second — gentle movement is usually better than complete rest. Light walking, gentle stretching — that keeps circulation moving and helps calm nerve irritation. And third — pay attention to your posture, especially if you work at a desk. How you sit matters more than most people realize.

Now, when should you actually come in and see us? If you’ve had that leg pain, numbness, or tingling for more than a few days — don’t wait it out. If it’s affecting your sleep, your work, or your daily life — come in. And if you’re ever experiencing weakness in the leg, or any changes in bladder or bowel function alongside this pain, please seek care right away. Those are signs that warrant immediate attention.

Sciatica can feel really scary. That radiating pain is intense, and it can make you feel like something is seriously wrong. But I want you to know — most cases respond really well to conservative care. You don’t have to jump straight to injections or surgery. Many, many people find significant relief through chiropractic and a focused rehabilitation approach.
