The Connection Between Stress and Physical Pain

Episode Notes:

In this episode of the Freedom Family Chiropractic podcast, Dr. David Ridos explores one of the most overlooked connections in health care: the relationship between stress and physical pain. Most people never realize that the tension, headaches, or back pain they’re experiencing may be directly rooted in their stress levels.

Dr. Ridos breaks down the science behind how stress triggers physical responses in the body, and why so many of his patients in Weston, Florida come in with pain that has stress at its core. Understanding this connection is the first step toward lasting relief and better overall health.

Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, occasional tension, or just want to understand your body better, this episode offers valuable insights that could change the way you think about stress and wellness.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m doctor Ridos, and you’re listening to the Freedom Family Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Weston, Florida. Today we’re talking about something that affects almost every single person I see in my office — and honestly, most people never connect the dots. We’re talking about stress. Specifically, the very real, very physical way that stress shows up in your body as pain.

Now, here’s the thing. When most people think about stress, they think about it as a mental or emotional problem. Something you just need to push through, or maybe talk to someone about. And sure, that’s part of it. But stress is not just in your head. It lives in your body. And if you’ve been dealing with neck tension, tight shoulders, low back pain, or headaches — stress might be playing a much bigger role than you realize.

Let me break this down for you. When you feel stressed, your brain sends a signal that essentially puts your whole body on alert. Your muscles tighten up. Your breathing gets shallow. Your posture changes. You start to hunch forward without even noticing it. And here’s what’s interesting — your body was actually designed to do that. It’s a survival response. The problem is, most of us are walking around in that state all day long. Deadlines, traffic, family stuff, financial pressure — the stress doesn’t stop. And so the muscle tension doesn’t stop either.

Over time, that constant tension starts to pull on your spine. It affects the joints in your neck and upper back especially. It can reduce your range of motion. It can create what we call trigger points — those really tender knots you feel when someone presses on your shoulders. And eventually, it just plain hurts.

You know what I hear a lot? People come in and say, “I don’t know why I’m in pain. I didn’t do anything.” And that’s exactly the point. You don’t have to lift something wrong or get in an accident to be in pain. Chronic stress, over weeks and months, can absolutely break your body down just as much as a physical injury can.

So what can you actually do about this? A few simple things. First — breathe. I know that sounds too easy, but slow, deep breathing actually signals your nervous system to calm down. It starts to release that fight-or-flight response. Even just a few minutes a day makes a real difference. Second — move. Gentle movement, walking, stretching — it helps flush out that tension your muscles have been holding. And third — pay attention to your posture, especially when you’re stressed. Notice if you’re clenching your jaw, raising your shoulders, or rounding forward at your desk. Just becoming aware of it gives you a chance to reset.

Now, here’s when it’s time to come see us. If you’ve been dealing with recurring pain that doesn’t seem to have a clear cause — if your neck is stiff, your back aches, your headaches keep coming back — don’t just wait it out. That pattern of tension and pain can get locked into your spine over time, and it becomes harder to unwind the longer it sits there. Chiropractic care works really well alongside stress management because we’re addressing what’s happening in the spine and nervous system directly. We’re helping your body get out of that guarded, tense state and move more freely.

At Freedom Family Chiropractic, we take the time to actually understand what’s going on with you. Not just the pain, but everything around it. Because your health is the whole picture.

If any of this sounds familiar, I’d love to see you in the office. Give us a call, or visit us in Weston. We’re here for your whole family, and we’d be honored to help. Thank you so much for listening today — I’ll see you next time.
