In this episode of the Freedom Family Chiropractic podcast, Dr. David Ridos breaks down one of the most overlooked aspects of any fitness routine: recovery time after exercise. Many people push hard in the gym but neglect what happens afterward, unknowingly sabotaging their progress and risking injury.
Dr. Ridos explains the science behind what your body goes through when you skip proper recovery, from muscle repair to nervous system stress, and why rest is just as important as the workout itself.
Tune in to learn practical, actionable steps you can start using today to recover smarter, feel better, and get more out of every workout — straight from the team at Freedom Family Chiropractic in Weston, Florida.
Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Ridos, and you’re listening to the Freedom Family Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Weston, Florida. Today we’re talking about something that I think a lot of people overlook — and honestly, it’s one of the most important parts of any fitness routine. We’re talking about recovery time after exercise. Why it matters, what happens in your body when you skip it, and what you can actually do about it starting today.
So here’s the thing. A lot of people come into my office with aches and pains, and when I ask about their workout routine, I hear the same thing over and over. They’re working hard, they’re consistent, they’re putting in the effort — but they’re not resting. And I get it. When you’re motivated, rest feels like wasted time. But here’s what’s actually happening inside your body when you push through without recovering properly.
Every time you exercise — whether it’s lifting weights, running, doing yoga, playing pickleball out here in South Florida — you’re creating tiny amounts of stress in your muscles, your joints, and your connective tissue. That’s not a bad thing. That stress is actually what triggers your body to get stronger. But here’s the key — your body doesn’t get stronger during the workout. It gets stronger during the recovery. If you’re not giving yourself that window, you’re essentially breaking things down without ever letting them build back up.
Now, let me talk about the spine for a second, because this is where it gets really relevant for what we do at Freedom Family Chiropractic. Your spine absorbs a tremendous amount of load during exercise. Running, jumping, heavy lifting — all of it compresses the discs between your vertebrae. Those discs need time and hydration to decompress and recover. When you’re constantly loading your spine without rest, you can start to see things like joint inflammation, disc irritation, and muscle imbalances that pull the spine out of alignment. That’s when people start feeling that nagging back pain, that stiffness in the morning, or that tension that just won’t go away.
So what can you actually do? Let me give you a few simple things to start with. First — honor your rest days. Two to three full rest days per week is a really good target for most active adults. On those days, you can still move. A walk, some light stretching, easy mobility work — that’s what we call active recovery, and it’s wonderful for circulation and healing. Second — sleep. I know you’ve heard this before, but deep sleep is when your body does the majority of its repair work. Aim for seven to nine hours. Third — stay hydrated. Your muscles, your discs, your joints — they all depend on water to function and recover properly. It sounds simple because it is, but so many people are chronically under-hydrated.
Here’s when I’d encourage you to come see us. If you’re doing everything right — resting, sleeping, staying hydrated — and you’re still dealing with persistent soreness, stiffness, or pain that lingers more than a few days after a workout, that’s your body telling you something needs attention. A chiropractic evaluation can help us identify whether there’s a joint that’s not moving well, a muscle that’s compensating, or a spinal misalignment that’s slowing down your recovery. We work with a lot of active people here in Weston, and helping them move better and recover faster is genuinely one of my favorite things to do.
You don’t have to push through pain. And you definitely don’t have to guess. We’re here to help you figure out what’s going on and get you back to doing what you love.
